WHAT IS A GICLEE? (zhee-klay)
The word "giclee" is a made up word derived from the French
verb "gicler" meaning " to squirt" since giclee's are made with
ink jet printers.
A TRUE "giclee print" is an image generated from a high
resolu-tion digital scan or a professional quality high
resolution digital file. Prints are created using professional
seven color ink jet printers, such as the two Epson 9600
printers JTO prints uses. These wide-format printers are
capable of producing incredible accurate detailed prints for
both the fine art and photographic markets.
JTO prints only to museum standards, using the same
museum quality archival pigmented inks on the same
museum quality archival canvas or fine art paper that
institutes such as Sotheby's and the Metropolitan Museum of
Art uses. This process cannot be duplicated on a home
printer.
Giclee's were originally developed as a proofing system for
the old lithographic printing presses. It soon became
apparent the giclee proofs were far superior to traditional
lithography in nearly every way. The colors were brighter, the
details were crisper and the range, or "gamut" of color was
far beyond that of lithography. Unlike litho prints, which
would start to fade in three years, the colors in true giclee
prints would not start to fade for at least 100 years or more.
Giclee's soon became coveted by collectors and galleries for
their fidelity and quality, and by artists because they didn't
have to be printed in huge quantities with a large layout
capitol and storage. The quality of the giclee print rivals
traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is
commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic
galleries around the world.
Another tremendous advantage of giclee printing is that
digital images can be reproduced to almost any size and onto
various media, giving the artist the ability to customize prints
for a specific client.
